Sloan Flush Valve Leaking Troubleshooting

There are many possible causes of a leaking flushometer. These include worn out parts, improper installation, incorrect part replacement, bad water quality, high traffic, and others. In this article, we identify the most common causes of leaks for Sloan manual flushometers, listed by leak location. We also share other resources to help you get the parts you need to quickly get your valve back in proper working order.

For leaks on Sloan sensor flushometers, utilize one of the resources listed below:

Sloan Flushometer Leaking from Top of Unit

Leaks occurring beneath the manual flushometer cover can signify that either the cover is not screwed on tightly enough, or the inside cover is cracked. If the cover isn't tight enough, simply use a fixed smooth jaw wrench to tighten it. (See our Flushometer Tool Guide Article to find the tools you need.)  If the inside cover is cracked, you will need to replace it with the A-71 Inside Cover - Part #08050.

Sloan Flushometer Leaking from Bottom of Unit

Leaks occurring at the bottom of the unit where the flushometer connects to the fixture can be an indication that the spud coupling assembly needs to be tightened or replaced. Click the part number below for the repair assembly that you need:

Sloan Flushometer Leaking from Vacuum Breaker

If you notice leaking under the vacuum breaker nut when your unit is flushed, then the internal vacuum breaker parts may need to be replaced. Learn more about the vacuum breaker and make sure you buy the right kit for your unit in our Vacuum Breaker Repair Kit article.

If the leak is coming from above the vacuum breaker coupling, whether it’s during or after flushing the unit, then the rubber sleeve inside the vacuum breaker could be damaged from the vacuum breaker coupling being overtightened. Dripping from below the vacuum breaking coupling during or after flushing can be caused by the rubber sleeve just being worn out. The solution for this is to replace the internal parts with a vacuum breaker repair kit.

To replace the entire vacuum breaker, review our Vacuum Breaker Replacement Guide

Sloan Flushometer Leaking from the Handle

Leaks from the handle can indicate that the internal handle parts needs to be replaced with a handle repair kit. Before replacing, first check if the handle coupling is loose, and tighten it with the following tools: the Non-Marking Offset Adjustable Valve Wrench (Part #08070) or the Sloan A-50 Super Wrench (Part #08047).

The water can be dripping from the handle socket or the handle coupling. Generally, handle repair kits have a life expectancy of 4-6+ years. To replace the full handle assembly, see Sloan B-73-A Handle Assembly - Part #08069. For just the Handle Repair Kit, there are two options:

Part #08439 (Sloan B-51-A)
High performance kit for new style and old style Royal units, as well as Regal units.

Part #08007 (Sloan B-50-A)
For Regal and old style Royal units

Sloan Flushometer Keeps Running

There are many reasons that a unit can continuously run with no shut-off. The solenoid could be stuck open, debris could be blocking the diaphragm bypass or be stuck under the diaphragm, or there could be a drop in water pressure. See #4 in our 9 Flush Valve Troubleshooting Tips article for more information on how to solve these issues. You will also find answers to flush length too short or too long, and flush valve not flushing issues as well.

Continuous running can be an indicator that a variety of parts need to be replaced.

  1. The Diaphragm kit needs to be replaced (link to article for Diaphragm guide) Diaphragm kits generally have a life expectancy of 2-4+ years for Regal and old Style Royal units, and 5-6+ for New Style Royal units made after 1998.
For piston type flushometers, the relief valve seat may be degraded and need to be replaced. See piston assembly options
  2. The Inside Cover (Part #08050) needs to be replaced. The inside cover has a life expectancy of 5-7+ years.
  3. The Control Stop needs to be replaced. This part has a life expectancy of 6-10+ years. Learn everything you need to know about control stops in our Sloan Control Stop Guide
